The reverence of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
In the primary department [Yrs 1 – 8], core subject areas are taught using the A.C.E. [Accelerated Christian Education] curriculum, supplemented by thematic unit studies developed each term from a God-centered, Biblical perspective, based on the Interactive Curriculum.
Each term’s thematic unit study focuses on a different facet of God’s character and, where appropriate, various subject areas radiate from this like spokes from the hub of a wheel. The details of this programme are developed by the staff and worked through together with the parents at Curriculum Planning Meetings. Here the various topics and the appropriate methods of teaching these are finalised.
In addition to core curriculum subjects, throughout the year Living Way participates in regular sports competitions with local primary schools – athletics, swimming, soccer, hockey, netball, touch rugby, cross country, cricket. Practicing for these events provides a basis for weekly physical education lessons throughout the year. Where possible, secondary students are also able to participate in these physical education activities, and we seek out opportunities for them to compete with secondary students from other schools, if practicable.
Home Skills Programme: As well as continuing their normal school work, part of the time at home will involve the children in the Home Skills programme. At the beginning of each unit, staff and parents design a home-based aspect of the programme which provides opportunities for the practice of positive attitudes and skills based around the character trait or theme being studied.
The secondary department [Yrs 9 – 13] utilises the A.C.E. curriculum as its core programme. This requires that at least one of the parents undergo formal A.C.E. training at the first available opportunity to enable them to effectively assist their child[ren] with their studies. The A.C.E. curriculum can be supplemented with courses from Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu [the New Zealand Correspondence School] or from other approved alternative course providers, subject to approval.
Living Way currently offers two academic qualification options for secondary students.
Students can work towards achieving either:
- N.Z. A.C.E. Certificate at Level 1, 2 or 3 and/or;
- CENZ [Christian Education New Zealand] Certificate, Level 3.
The Level 3 Certificates for both these qualifications are recognized for admission to NZ Universities.
A Certificate of Achievement is also available from either NZ A.C.E. or CENZ, enabling students to select courses and create qualifications specifically tailored for the vocation or tertiary course of their choice. This provides great flexibility to craft an individualized study programme that will enable each child to pursue their interests and to excel in their strengths.
